Education Should Be About Ways To Express Yourself

By Agnes Franco

Ways to express yourself are essential because we are all like pressure cookers. Stress builds up within us explosively unless we have some means of preventing it. Dogs may bark and cows may chew their cud. Human beings have various other ways of preventing stress.

Fury and anger are unhealthy ways that human beings express themselves. In some cases a person is able to tolerate minor frustrations and irritations for some time while the pressure builds up. Then a point is reached and some minor things can trigger an explosion. In such cases a violent outburst can relieve tension and be followed by a period of calm.

In literature there are many tales told about catharsis. It is generally accepted that it is better to have a cathartic experience than to bottle emotions up indefinitely. In such cases the stress may manifest itself in contorted forms perhaps by hysteria or spite. In many cases young people who are frustrated by dysfunctional societies express themselves in anti-social actions such as vandalism or assault.

If children are introduced to games and sports whilst young before they will probably continue to enjoy them throughout life. As a result they will have an outlet. They will express themselves through competition and activity. Although this will entail some stress it will be of the healthy variety that is a necessary part of life.

Stress is not only physical but also mental. For that reason the best schools balance games with cultural activities such as debating, drama, or charitable events. A person who has been introduced to music will have a means of calm expression for life. Such life skills will also equip them to manage stress and develop strategies for coping with the inevitable vicissitudes of life.

Psychologists suggest that beneath the various ways that there are to express yourself there is one vital element. Even a person who has not had a rich education and does not have many life skills can survive mentally and emotionally if he has the capacity to compare himself in some way with an abstract concept. This is the basis of self expression. The capacity for metaphor keeps us all sane.
