What Makes A Charismatic Leader?

By Randy Tennery

Leadership requires an enormous amount of broad based skills, attributes, and abilities. Though different leaders have different characteristics, one thing that the good leaders share is their built in charisma. Without a fair amount of natural charisma, it would be quite hard to lead effectively. It is not tough to miss the characteristics that make a charismatic leader. Consider this a good thing because when you recognize the signs of a good leader, you will be well on your way towards modeling those same qualities.

Physical appearance is the first manifestation of a charismatic leader. Does the individual fit the part of a leader? If no, that individual isn't really one that other people would want to follow. A charismatic leader is somebody who dresses very well, is well-groomed, and looks like he or she is in good health. Nonetheless, this doesn't mean putting on costly clothes or having the most buff body. This just means you must look the part -- that you look your best and that people view you as a leader just by looking at how you present yourself.

Being a great speaker is another attribute of all charismatic leaders. Charismatic people tend to draw people toward them, and the charismatic leaders have a way of speaking to individuals articulately. It's actually a must for leaders to have excellent speaking abilities. You should be able to express your directives to your followers in a way that they can fully grasp. That enables others to properly follow your lead. A side point needs to be brought up here. Giving directives isn't about screaming orders or making demands. That simply isn't a charismatic means for a leader to take.

Needless to say, good speaking skills is only half of the equation. A charismatic leader must also have great listening skills. Many folks are self-absorbed to the point their conversational abilities are one-sided. They hardly ever give the other individual a chance to talk or be heard. Charismatic leaders are attentive listeners, giving other people the opportunity to talk. This shows others that they care and people usually trust these leaders. People who have confidence in their leader usually follow their leader's directives much more willingly. And no, you simply can't fake your way through this. Either you cultivate great listening skills or you don't. It really is easy for people to see if you're just faking it.

Charismatic leaders are generally optimistic people. Their positive attitude can be seen in how they talk and act around people. Due to their positive mindset, charismatic leaders can encourage others. They can motivate their followers to reach their desired goals.

That's it -- the qualities that make up a charismatic leader. There really isn't any secret or magic formula to be one. These qualities are basically grounded in human interactions. If you model these characteristics, you will find the ability to become a more charismatic leader is much more feasible.

In my opinion, a charismatic leader is that person who leads by example, knows others' necessities, communicate a lot for the company's sake.
Also, at Toronto leadership training camp, I've learned about self-confidence, responsibility, integrity, motivation and so on.
