No More Bunny Lines with Botox

By Anne Hastings Fennell

Bunny lines refer to those creases that form on the sides of the nose when you wrinkle up your nose. Some people say they look a little like a bunny when it wiggles its nose. So, it's not surprising that the name bunny lines has stuck. The nasalis muscle is responsible for causing this movement and action. It is a band-like muscle that stretches across the bridge of the nose, and it allows you to flare your nostrils and wrinkle up your nose in a sniffing like motion. People often use this muscle involuntarily when squinting, frowning or laughing.

Lines and wrinkles can remain even when the muscle is not being used. Just like other areas of the face, repetition can play a defining factor in this development of deep lines and wrinkles. The aging process only exaggerates this effect. These bunny lines go across the bridge of the nose and can extend down the sides of the nose into the tear trough area. If people overuse the nasalis muscle, as can occur when their frown area between their eyebrows is treated, they can actually make the bunny lines worse.

Thankfully, bunny lines can very easily be treated with Botox. The dosing depends upon each individual's unique anatomy, but is usually as low as five to ten units. Botox is injected into both sides of the nasal bridge, targeting the nasalis muscle. Most patients indicate that the injection is completely painless. The needle used for Botox injections is very fine and some patients aren't even aware that they have received an injection. The nasalis is a pretty strong muscle, even though it is small in size; sometimes a few more units are required after the initial injection is given. It's best if two weeks have passed prior to receiving that next injection. What the Botox ends up doing is relaxing the nasalis muscle. And what this does is smooth out the lines across the nose and down the sides of the nose. In other words, it reduces or eliminates the bunny lines. When this is combined with a frown treatment, it can turn back the clock and create a more refreshed appearance.

So, if you are suffering your bunny lines, consider getting a Botox treatment to bring back those youthful looks.

The Botox Units

Botox comes in a one hundred unit, multi-dose vial. The Botox protein sticks to the walls of the glass vial in which it comes. In order to be injected into muscles, the freeze-dried protein must be reconstituted. In order to dissolve the protein into a liquid solution so that it can be injected, a sterile saline must be injected into the vial.
