Seven Tips On Prayer That Will Improve Your Prayer Life

By John Arnold

Anyone can improve their prayer life by just applying a few simple tips on prayer. Here are seven of my favorite prayer tips. Each one of them is a practice I have applied in my own life, so I know from experience that they are all beneficial.

1. Schedule your prayer time. You can pray anytime and anywhere, but people are much more consistent in praying if they have a set prayer time and place. Make this time a daily commitment that other things must be worked in around, rather than giving prayer your left over time.

2) Use devotional guides, periodically. A broader prayer life is one benefit of being exposed to new ways of praying as you use a prayer guide. Using a devotional guide can also help you focus your attention. If your mind tends to wander as you pray, the guide becomes a tangible prompt for your attention.

3) Pray out loud. Whether you speak or sing, praying aloud is another great way to hold your attention. It is much harder to lose focus when you are physically engaged in prayer.

4) Pray from the heart. Many people are very self-conscious about whether they are praying "right". This is particularly true when praying out loud in front of other people. Just remember, you're not praying for the people around you. You are praying to God. Always strive for sincerity.

5) Keep a "prayer catch." Have you ever told someone, "I will pray for you", only to forget and then feel guilty the next time you see her. You can eliminate this problem by carrying a small notebook in your pocket as a "prayer catch." Write down prayer concerns as they come to you and never forget again.

6) Listen. No one enjoys a one-sided conversation. Be sure that you take time to listen to God. You may not hear God speaking to you audibly, but God may bring to mind a verse, idea, person or memory that you should listen to. You will likely miss it, if you aren't actively listening.

7) Mix it up. Prayer habits can become prayer ruts. Periodically, try new forms of prayer. If your prayer life is feeling a bit ho-hum, something as simple as writing your prayers or singing praises can reinvigorate your time with God. Keep seeking and applying new prayer instruction to keep your prayer life fresh.

Lastly, you can become more engaged by applying any of these tips on prayer. You will see results from some tips more quickly than others. However, if you really want to experience significant improvement, I recommend that you apply any given strategy for at least several weeks.
